Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is currently testing a new feature for its Quest headsets that has the potential to revolutionize the way users interact with virtual reality. This feature, which allows users to place windows freely in their virtual space, is reminiscent of the Apple Vision Pro’s capabilities. While Meta’s Quest headsets have already had multi-window multitasking functionality for some time, this new experimental feature takes it one step further.
The current version of Meta’s Horizon OS only supports three virtual windows that are docked in a side-by-side layout. However, with the new experimental feature, users can freely move up to three additional 2D app windows, such as browsers or OS windows, around their virtual space. This opens up a world of possibilities for increased productivity and efficiency while using the Quest headset.
According to a demonstration video by a data miner named Luna, the windows placed in the virtual space will only remember their placement within a limited distance. If users switch orientation or reset the view, the windows will return to their default positions. While this may be a limitation, it still shows promising potential for improved multitasking capabilities within the Quest headset.
In addition to the free placement of windows, the update also allows users to switch between curved and flat windows. There is also a dimmer functionality that lowers the brightness of virtual environments when using 2D apps. While these features may not yet work in passthrough mode, they add to the overall user experience and customization options available with the Quest headsets.
The Apple Vision Pro offers similar functionality, allowing users to move windows around their physical space and have them remain in place even when the headset is removed. This level of spatial computing is unmatched by the Quest headset at this time. However, considering the significant price difference between the two products, the Quest headset still offers a compelling option for users looking to enhance their productivity without breaking the bank.
The potential of Meta’s Quest headsets for productivity is significant.
