The New AI Info Label by Meta: A Closer Look

Meta recently made an important update to its artificial intelligence (AI) content detection label, changing it from “Made with AI” to “AI Info.” This update came in response to criticism from Instagram influencers and photographers who felt that their original posts were being incorrectly labelled as AI-generated content.

The previous label, “Made with AI,” failed to meet people’s expectations and often lacked sufficient context. This led to confusion among users and raised concerns about the accuracy of the labelling process. Meta acknowledged these issues and decided to introduce the new “AI Info” label as a solution.

The new label is intended to provide users with more context about images and videos that have been edited using AI tools. By replacing the old label with “AI Info,” Meta hopes to eliminate confusion and make it clearer to users when AI technology has been used to create or edit a post.

Meta updated a previous post outlining its approach to labelling AI-generated content, emphasizing that even minor edits made with AI tools will be flagged. Meta stated that it uses industry-standard indicators, such as the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) standards, to detect content created with AI. Despite these efforts, there are still challenges ahead. Many AI-generated images continue to go undetected by Meta’s tools, raising questions about the effectiveness of the current system. There is also a concern that the widespread use of the “AI Info” label to flag images edited with AI could dilute its original purpose of identifying deepfakes and manipulative AI content.
