Threads Shows Steady Growth, But Faces Challenges in Overtaking X

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently shared insights during the company’s Q4 2023 earnings announcement, revealing that Threads, Meta’s Twitter clone, is experiencing growth in both users and engagement. According to Zuckerberg, Threads now boasts 130 million monthly active users, surpassing its initial launch peak. This indicates a promising trajectory for the app’s success.

Since its launch a few months ago, Threads has been steadily gaining traction. In Meta’s Q3 earnings call, Zuckerberg announced that the app was closing in on 100 million active users. It was also made available to EU users in December, which was expected to contribute millions of additional active users from that region alone. However, it is worth noting that the current user base of 130 million is lower than anticipated. Despite this, Threads has managed to build a significant active community in a relatively short amount of time.

Threads aims to surpass X as the top real-time discussion app. X currently boasts approximately 500 million monthly active users, which is more than four times the number that Threads currently has. X’s established user behaviors and community building give it a significant advantage. Furthermore, many of the most followed profiles on X have not even launched a Threads account, indicating that Threads still has a long way to go in terms of becoming a critical consideration for users. Notably, sports communities, in particular, may prove challenging to shift from X, unless external factors come into play.

Recent rumors suggest that X could face existential issues due to financial difficulties. After Elon Musk lost his $55 billion pay package from Tesla, speculation arose that he may struggle to cover X’s expenses. Despite the unlikelihood of this scenario, X’s operating margins remain tight, even with Musk’s cost reduction measures. Additionally, the platform’s ad revenue has declined by 50% as advertisers distance themselves from Musk’s controversial statements. Any further impacts on funding could have significant consequences for X, particularly if the app’s funding structure is sensitive to such changes. AdWeek reported that X’s ad intake among top brands dropped by 55% during the Super Bowl.

Comparisons between Threads and X are somewhat unfair due to Threads’ relative youth in the market. Nevertheless, it is the most logical comparison, given the Threads team’s focus. However, Threads is also taking a different approach to user engagement, which may differentiate it from X over time. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri recently hinted at upcoming features for Threads, such as trending topics and lists. These additions could help the app resemble Twitter’s earlier days. However, Mosseri cautioned that these highly requested updates may not significantly influence user behavior. Only time will tell if these features catalyze further growth and engagement within Threads.

Threads seems to be building a platform that offers value, backed by a solid base of active users. This foundation puts it in a good position for future expansion. However, overtaking X is still a daunting challenge with many obstacles ahead. While the signs are positive at this stage, Threads must navigate these challenges and continue to innovate in order to establish itself as the top real-time discussion app.
