The Vulnerability of GPUs: A Growing Concern in Artificial Intelligence Systems

As companies continue to advance the development of artificial intelligence (AI) systems, the demand for computing power has led to a significant reliance on graphics processing unit (GPU) chips. These GPUs are essential for running large language models (LLMs) and processing vast amounts of data quickly. However, a recent study conducted by researchers from New York-based security firm Trail of Bits has shed light on a concerning vulnerability present in various popular GPU brands and models, including Apple, Qualcomm, and AMD chips. This vulnerability could potentially enable attackers to steal substantial quantities of data from a GPU’s memory, raising significant security concerns in the AI community.

While the security of central processing units (CPUs) has been a major focus for the silicon industry, ensuring that data does not leak from CPU memory even during high-speed operations, the same cannot be said for GPUs. Traditionally, GPUs have been designed primarily for raw graphics processing power, with less emphasis on data privacy and security. As AI applications and machine learning expand the utilization of GPUs, the vulnerabilities in their architecture become increasingly urgent. Heidy Khlaaf, Trail of Bits’ engineering director for AI and machine learning assurance, highlights this concern, stating, “There is a broader security concern about these GPUs not being as secure as they should be and leaking a significant amount of data.”

The vulnerability identified by the researchers, named LeftoverLocals, requires the attacker to have established some level of operating system access on the targeted device. Modern computers and servers have implemented data isolation measures to protect users’ privacy, preventing unauthorized access to data. However, the LeftoverLocals attack breaches these security barriers, allowing hackers to extract data from the local memory of the vulnerable GPUs. This compromised data could include LLM-generated queries and responses, as well as the parameters influencing the AI’s responses. In their proof of concept, the researchers demonstrate an attack where a target requests information about WIRED magazine using an LLM. The attacker’s device successfully collects the response by executing a LeftoverLocals attack, extracting data from the vulnerable GPU memory.

To determine the extent of the vulnerability, the researchers conducted tests on 11 chips from seven GPU manufacturers, along with corresponding programming frameworks. They identified the LeftoverLocals vulnerability in Apple, AMD, and Qualcomm GPUs. In collaboration with the US-CERT Coordination Center and the Khronos Group, the researchers initiated a coordinated disclosure in September, ensuring the proper channels were alerted to the vulnerability. Nvidia, Intel, and Arm GPUs were not found to be vulnerable, according to the researchers. However, both Apple and AMD confirmed that their GPUs are impacted. This implies that popular devices such as the Apple iPhone 12 Pro and the M2 MacBook Air are susceptible to the vulnerability.

Apple responded to the vulnerability, acknowledging the issue and stating that fixes were implemented in their latest M3 and A17 processors, introduced in late 2023. However, this means that previous generations of Apple devices, including millions of iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks, may still be vulnerable. The Trail of Bits researchers conducted tests on Apple devices in January and found that the M2 MacBook Air remained vulnerable, while the iPad Air 3rd generation A12 appeared to have received a patch. Nevertheless, the potential risks associated with GPU vulnerabilities persist as other manufacturers and chip models may still be susceptible.

As the reliance on GPUs for AI processing intensifies, it becomes crucial to address the security gaps present in their architecture. The significant amount of data that can potentially be leaked from a GPU’s memory poses a severe threat to data privacy and confidentiality. The GPU industry must take immediate action to prioritize data security and develop architectures that can withstand malicious attacks like LeftoverLocals. Collaborative efforts between researchers, chip manufacturers, and standards bodies should continue to ensure timely vulnerability detection, disclosure, and patching.
