The State of Cybersecurity Programs in the U.S.

The state of cybersecurity programs in the United States is currently facing a significant amount of variation. With adversaries constantly changing their tactics, cybersecurity professionals must possess the skills to respond effectively. However, the researchers noted that industry professionals have different expectations of skill levels compared to what graduates of the programs have, suggesting a gap that needs to be addressed.

The review also highlighted the potential benefits of incorporating ideas from other fields, such as educational psychology, into cybersecurity programs. By utilizing educational and instructional tools and theories, programs can improve the rigor of their evaluation processes and enhance the quality of education provided to students. As part of the study, the researchers analyzed programs at 100 institutions designated as a National Security Administration’s National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity. While these programs are required to meet specific educational content and quality standards set by the NSA, the researchers found that there is still a wide variation in the types of programs offered and the amount of cybersecurity-specific courses provided. This discrepancy suggests a need for greater alignment between industry requirements and educational offerings.

The researchers hope that their work will serve as a benchmark for comparing cybersecurity programs across the U.S. and as a roadmap for better meeting industry needs in the future. With cybersecurity being a relatively new field of study, especially in terms of offering separate degree programs, there is a growing opportunity to enhance and refine cybersecurity education to prepare students for the challenges of the industry. As the field continues to evolve, collaboration between academia and industry will be crucial in ensuring the success of cybersecurity programs nationwide.
