The Rise of AI in Phishing Attacks: Can Machines Deceive Humans?

The X-Force team designed an experiment aimed at measuring the effectiveness of AI-generated phishing emails compared to those crafted by humans. Using ChatGPT, an AI language model, the researchers instructed it to generate convincing phishing emails targeting employees in the healthcare sector. In just five minutes, ChatGPT produced a persuasive email, while it typically took the team around 16 hours to create a similar email manually.

Surprisingly, even experienced human social engineers found the AI-generated phishing emails to be fairly persuasive. Stephanie (Snow) Carruthers, IBM’s chief people hacker, who has almost a decade of social engineering experience, expressed concern about the AI’s ability to deceive. She admitted that the experiment changed her initial belief that humans would always be superior in phishing attacks.

Although AI came close to matching human-generated emails in persuasiveness, the human team still had a slightly higher click-through rate. Carruthers attributed this advantage to emotional intelligence, personalization, and concise subject lines. The human-generated emails established an emotional connection with recipients by focusing on a specific and relevant example within their organization. In contrast, AI chose a more generalized topic, which lacked the same emotional impact.

Furthermore, Carruthers noted that the human-generated emails included the recipient’s name, which added a personal touch. Additionally, the subject lines of the human-generated emails were direct and to the point, while the AI emails had lengthier, more suspicious subject lines. Ultimately, these factors led to a higher reporting rate for the AI emails, indicating that recipients were more wary of potential phishing attempts.

Changing the Perception of Phishing

One common misconception about phishing emails is that they are often littered with grammatical errors and poor spelling. However, AI-driven phishing attempts often demonstrate grammatical correctness, leading recipients to believe they are legitimate. To combat this perception, Carruthers emphasized the need for organizations to educate employees about the warning signs beyond traditional red flags.

Employees should be trained to recognize indicators of length and complexity in emails, as these can be indicative of potential phishing attempts. By bringing awareness to these subtle cues, organizations can better protect their employees from falling victim to AI-generated phishing attacks.
