Jurassic Park, the beloved dinosaur movie franchise, is preparing to take gamers on a trip down memory lane with the release of its Classic Games Collection. This collection aims to resurrect some of the long-forgotten 8 and 16-bit console games that were inspired by the iconic film. It’s a nostalgic journey that might just give the overlooked adaptations the recognition they deserve.
The Jurassic Park Classic Games Collection is exactly what it sounds like – a bundle comprising seven retro games in one digital package. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that there are actually three distinct games with different names and ports. These games include versions for the NES, SNES, Game Boy, and Genesis consoles, all titled Jurassic Park. Additionally, players will also get a chance to experience the SNES and Game Boy versions of the 1994 non-canon sequel, The Chaos Continues, as well as Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition, an exclusive sequel for the Genesis console.
While the games in the collection stay true to their original essence, some modern enhancements have been introduced to enhance the gaming experience. Players will now have the luxury of save states and other quality-of-life improvements. Furthermore, there will also be new in-game maps for those who are already familiar with the originals, providing an extra level of excitement for long-time fans.
This collection focuses solely on the 8-bit and 16-bit games released in 1993 and 1994. As a result, it unfortunately overlooks some of the more obscure additions to the franchise. Notably missing are games like 1994’s Jurassic Park Interactive, a collection of 3DO FMV-supplemented mini-games, and the more relaxed Paint and Activity Center for DOS. These less action-packed titles would have offered a unique perspective on the Jurassic Park universe, and their absence is a missed opportunity.
As the Classic Games Collection celebrates the 30th anniversary of the original film, fans are hopeful that it might pave the way for a similar revival of the franchise’s later video games. Titles that were released around The Lost World: Jurassic Park could potentially find their way back into the spotlight. This raises the question of whether we will finally see redemption for the ambitious, yet flawed, Jurassic Park: Trespasser game. Despite its shortcomings, Trespasser was a technically innovative game that influenced future titles like Half-Life 2, Halo, and Far Cry. With any luck, licensing issues will be resolved, allowing these later games to resurface and garner the recognition they deserve.
The Jurassic Park Classic Games Collection will be available on Steam for $30 starting November 22nd. It’s an opportunity for gamers and fans to relive the excitement of the film franchise through these retro games. Whether you’re a seasoned player eager to revisit your childhood favorites or a newcomer curious about the beginnings of Jurassic Park’s video game legacy, this collection promises an entertaining and nostalgic trip down memory lane. Prepare to face dinosaurs and relive the thrill of Jurassic Park in a way you’ve never experienced before.
