Reliance Jio is set to introduce JioSpaceFiber, an innovative satellite-based gigabit fiber service, in India in the near future. The telecom company has already completed all the necessary submissions to the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe). Once approved by the regulator, JioSpaceFiber will become the first satellite-based giga fiber internet service in the country.
To deploy satellite services in India, operators are required to obtain security clearances and approvals from various ministries. According to reports, Jio is in the final stages of securing these necessary certifications from IN-SPACe. Once Jio receives the approval, they will be able to launch their satellite communication services across the country.
At the 2023 India Mobile Congress, Jio demonstrated the capabilities of its JioSpaceFiber technology. During the event, the company announced the successful connection of four remote locations in different states in India. The locations include Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur in Odisha, and ONGC-Jorhat in Assam. These remote locations have been connected using Jio’s satellite-based giga fiber internet service.
In order to provide reliable and efficient satellite-based internet connectivity in India, Jio has partnered with Société Européenne des Satellites (SES), a Luxembourg-based satellite telecommunications network provider. This collaboration gives Jio access to SES’s medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites, including the O3b and the new O3b mPOWER satellites. By leveraging these advanced satellite systems, Jio aims to offer a top-notch internet experience to its customers.
Jio’s venture into satellite-based internet services will likely bring about tough competition in the Indian market. Several global players, including Starlink led by Elon Musk, OneWeb by Eutelsat Group, and Amazon’s Project Kuiper, are also eyeing India as a potential market for their satellite internet services. With multiple contenders, customers can expect improved connectivity options and potentially better pricing.
As of now, Jio has not made any official announcements regarding the timeline for the launch of its satellite internet services in India. However, given the progress made with obtaining the necessary approvals and partnerships, it is expected that JioSpaceFiber will be available to Indian consumers soon. Once launched, JioSpaceFiber has the potential to transform internet connectivity in remote and underserved areas, bridging the digital divide and empowering millions with high-speed internet access.
The imminent launch of JioSpaceFiber in India marks an exciting development in the telecommunications sector. With the combination of satellite-based technology and gigabit fiber services, Jio aims to revolutionize the internet landscape in the country. As competition intensifies in the market, customers can look forward to a more connected and digitally inclusive future.
