Recent data from corporate reputation tracking firm Caliber suggests that Tesla’s sales are suffering due to Elon Musk’s controversial behavior. The consideration score, a metric used to track consumer interest in brands, has dropped significantly for Tesla, falling from 70 percent to 31 percent. This decline is alarming, especially considering that rival EV-producing manufacturers like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes have seen slight increases in their consideration scores during the same period.

The study found that 42 percent of respondents viewed Musk unfavorably, compared to 34 percent when his stake in Twitter was announced in April 2022. Caliber reports that 83 percent of Americans associate Tesla with Elon Musk, indicating that the CEO’s behavior is directly impacting the company’s reputation. Additionally, data from brand valuation consultancy Brand Finance shows a decline in Tesla’s reputation among consumers in multiple countries between 2023 and 2024. This negative perception can have far-reaching consequences for Tesla, especially as it faces increasing competition in the EV market.

While Musk’s behavior is just one of the factors influencing Tesla’s sales, it is significant enough to warrant attention. The company has already warned of lower growth in 2024 compared to the previous year, citing manufacturing delays and shipping disruptions. Tesla is also facing stiff competition from companies like Rivian and China’s BYD in the EV market, making it crucial to address the negative impact of Musk’s controversial behavior on sales.
