The upcoming 80th meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in Dubai will serve as a platform for airline executives to delve into the latest AI projects and innovations.

Aviation companies, traditionally operating on thin profit margins, are turning to AI as a means to enhance productivity and gain a competitive edge in the market. Geoffrey Weston, a prominent consultant in the airline industry, highlighted the unprecedented acceleration of technology and capabilities brought about by AI. The ability of AI to rapidly provide accurate information to key stakeholders in a highly uncertain environment is seen as a game-changer.

Air France-KLM is at the forefront of leveraging AI with more than 40 projects utilizing generative artificial intelligence. One such project includes a tool designed to interact with customers in 85 different languages, set to be deployed at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport by 2025. Groupe ADP, the airport operator, has also embarked on AI initiatives in collaboration with startups to enhance customer service. These initiatives have significantly reduced the percentage of unanswered phone calls and streamlined operational processes.

As air travel continues to grow, the industry faces challenges such as reducing wait times and optimizing passenger experiences. Jerome Bouchard, an aerospace expert, emphasized the need for innovation in addressing these challenges. The implementation of facial recognition technology at airport security checkpoints could greatly enhance efficiency, but it requires robust data synchronization and coordination among various stakeholders.

Modern aircraft are equipped with advanced self-diagnostic and control systems that generate massive amounts of data, which can be effectively analyzed with AI. However, experts unanimously agree that the critical decision-making aspect of piloting an aircraft should remain in human hands. Patrice Caine, the CEO of Thales, emphasized the importance of human responsibility in decision-making processes, underscoring the complementary role of AI in enhancing operational efficiency.
