In its new guidance for governments, UNESCO emphasized the lack of preparedness among public authorities in addressing the ethical implications associated with the deployment of “generative” Artificial Intelligence programs within schools. UNESCO expressed concerns that substituting human teachers with such programs could potentially compromise a child’s emotional well-being and make them susceptible to manipulation. While acknowledging the potential benefits of generative AI for human development, UNESCO urged for public engagement, as well as the implementation of necessary safeguards and governmental regulations before integrating AI into education.
Last year, generative AI programs, notably ChatGPT, gained significant attention for their ability to produce essays, poems, and even carry out conversations based on minimal prompts.
