The Future of Nintendo: Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel and Legend of Zelda Film Announced

Nintendo fans have something to look forward to as the company has announced the development of a sequel to the highly successful Super Mario Bros. Movie. The original movie was a box office hit, grossing over $1 billion, making it an easy decision for Nintendo to produce a follow-up. In a recent video, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination Entertainment’s Chris Meledandri shared that the next movie is currently in development, with a scheduled release date of April 3rd, 2026. The movie will be storyboarded by Illumination Studios Paris, under the direction of Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who worked on the first film. Animation is set to begin soon, and the movie will be released in the US on April 3rd, followed by other markets globally throughout the rest of the month.

According to Meledandri, the sequel will have a “bright and fun story” that builds upon the world established in the first movie. Directed by Wes Ball, known for his work on the Maze Runner trilogy and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the Legend of Zelda film will be produced by Avi Arad and Shigeru Miyamoto. While details about the movie’s plot and production schedule are scarce, fans of the iconic game series are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to see their favorite characters and storylines brought to life on the big screen.

The company has announced that a Switch remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, a remaster of the 3DS title Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, will be available on May 23rd and June 27th, respectively. Additionally, on March 12th, the Nintendo Switch Online Game Boy collection will be expanded to include Dr. Mario, offering players a nostalgic gaming experience on the popular console.
