The Future of Medical Imaging: Perovskite X-Ray CMOS Detector

Medical imaging plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases, especially cardiovascular and cancer disorders. The accuracy and efficiency of X-ray imaging are dependent on the quality of the detectors used in the process. While traditional semiconductor detectors have some limitations in terms of spatial resolution and radiation dose, there is a growing need for innovative solutions that can overcome these challenges.

Researchers at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) and Central China Normal University have made significant progress in the development of a new high-performance X-ray detector using perovskite materials. Perovskite, known for its high X-ray absorption efficiency and cost-effectiveness, has emerged as a promising alternative to traditional semiconductor materials such as Si, a-Se, and CdZnTe/CdTe. By combining perovskite with CMOS technology, the researchers were able to create a direct-conversion X-ray detector with superior performance characteristics.

The experimental results presented in the study published in Nature Communications demonstrate the impressive capabilities of the perovskite CMOS detector. The thick CsPbBr3 perovskite film printed on a dedicated CMOS pixel array exhibited high X-ray detection sensitivity, low dose detection limit, and excellent spatial resolution. The detector was able to achieve 2D imaging with high spatial resolution and low radiation dose, as well as 3D CT imaging at a fast signal readout speed of 300 fps.

The development of lead halide perovskites for X-ray detectors represents a significant advancement in the field of medical imaging. The combination of perovskite materials with CMOS technology has the potential to revolutionize the development of state-of-the-art X-ray detectors with enhanced spatial resolution, readout speed, and low-dose detection efficiency.
