The Future of Android with New AI Features

In the past, Google introduced a feature called Now on Tap in Android Marshmallow that allowed users to access contextual information by tapping and holding the home button. By circling physics and math problems on the screen, users can now receive step-by-step instructions on how to solve the problems without leaving the app they are using. This functionality, powered by Google’s LearnLM models fine-tuned for education, goes beyond simply providing answers; it teaches students how to solve problems effectively. In the future, Circle to Search will be able to tackle more complex problems like diagrams and graphs, further enhancing its utility for students.

Gemini is Google’s AI assistant that is positioned to overshadow Google Assistant in terms of capabilities and features. Users now have the option to replace Google Assistant with Gemini on most Android phones, signaling a shift towards a more advanced assistant experience. When questioned about the fate of Google Assistant, Sameer Samat, president of the Android ecosystem at Google, emphasized that Gemini is an opt-in experience for users. While Gemini continues to evolve and become more advanced, there are no immediate plans to phase out Google Assistant.
