Depending on their configuration, these cameras can monitor multiple vehicles in different lanes and directions simultaneously. Equipped with high-definition cameras, they offer optimal performance in various lighting and weather conditions, including nighttime, fog, and heavy rain. Some cameras can also enforce speed limits based on the type of vehicle, such as heavy vehicles. Additionally, automated number plate recognition capabilities enable them to identify vehicles of interest to law enforcement agencies, such as stolen or unregistered vehicles.

Studies examining the impact of safety cameras have shown promising results. A systematic review of different types of speed cameras indicates that they effectively reduce average speeds, the number of speeding vehicles, and most importantly, serious injuries and fatal crashes, each by approximately 20%. While the effectiveness of mobile phone cameras is yet to be extensively studied, the introduction of these cameras in New South Wales led to a substantial decline in mobile phone use within three years. Enforcement data further supports the efficiency and effectiveness of safety cameras in detecting infringements.

Merely relying on common sense, courtesy, or self-interest is not sufficient to address the issues posed by reckless driving behaviors. Safety cameras have proven their efficacy in improving road safety and reducing accidents. Enhancing compliance with regulations and encouraging safer driving practices are integral to the goal of making our roads safer for all users.
