The highly-anticipated sequel, Dune: Part Two, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, has faced a significant delay due to the ongoing actors’ strike in Hollywood. Originally slated for a November 3 release, the film has been pushed back to March 15, 2024. This decision by Warner Bros. and Legendary also led to the rescheduling of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which will now hit theaters on April 12, 2024. In an effort to maximize its impact, Dune: Part Two will also receive an IMAX release, with supported screens hosting the film for an extended run of up to six weeks.
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two has become one of the biggest casualties of the SAG-AFTRA strikes. With stars like Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Rebecca Ferguson unable to fulfill any promotional duties or participate in interviews, the film’s marketing campaign has been severely hindered. Additionally, the lack of actors available for awards campaigns has also affected the Emmy Awards, forcing a delay in the event. Despite these setbacks, the first installment of Dune was a major success during the pandemic, grossing $402 million globally and solidifying its potential as a franchise comparable to Star Wars.
By shifting the release date of Dune: Part Two to March 15, Warner Bros. inadvertently puts itself in a challenging position, as it directly conflicts with another major film release from the company. Mickey 17, directed by the Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon-ho and starring Robert Pattinson, is scheduled to hit theaters just two weeks later on March 29, 2024. This overlapping release could potentially have negative effects on the box office performance of both films, especially given the increased interest in Bong’s works since Parasite’s Oscar win in 2019. Consequently, there is a possibility that Mickey 17 could also face a delay.
While reports had suggested that Warner Bros. might reconsider its December release calendar due to the strike, the company has decided to stick to its predetermined dates. Films such as Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet, will be released on December 15, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom on December 20, and The Color Purple on Christmas Day. Despite the uncertainty caused by the dual strikes organized by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, Warner Bros. remains committed to theatrical releases.
Dune: Part Two continues the story from the first chapter, picking up where it left off. The film follows Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet), Chani (Zendaya), and the Fremen soldiers as they unite to seek revenge against the Harkonnen lineage, the conspirators responsible for the murder of Paul’s family. The sequel introduces new characters, including Austin Butler as the cruel Feyd-Rautha, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV, and Léa Seydoux as the Bene Gesserit Lady Margot.
A New Release Date for Dune: Part Two
Fans will have to exercise patience as Dune: Part Two is now scheduled to release on March 15, 2024, in theaters worldwide. Despite the delay, the film’s dedicated fanbase eagerly awaits the continuation of the Dune saga and looks forward to the expansion of the franchise’s universe.
