Renowned author Walter Isaacson recently faced swift backlash following an excerpt from his upcoming book, “Elon Musk.” The excerpt detailed how Musk allegedly ordered engineers to shut off Starlink’s satellite network over Crimea, effectively thwarting a Ukrainian attack on Russian warships. Concerned about the potential consequences, Musk claimed that “Starlink was not meant to be involved in wars.” However, in an attempt to clarify the situation, Isaacson took to social media to share new details.
Isaacson’s clarification shed light on the Starlink issue. According to him, the Ukrainians believed they had coverage all the way to Crimea, but it turned out to be disabled. They then approached Musk, requesting him to enable the coverage for a planned drone submarine attack on the Russian fleet. However, Musk, potentially foreseeing the drastic consequences, decided not to enable it, fearing it would escalate into a major war.

In 2014, Russia illegally annexed the peninsula from Ukraine, and it became home to the country’s Black Sea warships. In response to Isaacson’s excerpt, a top aide to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy openly criticized Musk. Mykhailo Podolyak accused Musk of allowing the Russian military fleet to fire missiles at Ukrainian cities by not permitting Ukrainian drones to destroy part of the fleet using Starlink interference. Podolyak condemned Musk’s actions, claiming that innocent civilians and children were paying the price for his alleged ignorance and big ego.
