The gaming community was recently introduced to a new addition to The Elder Scrolls franchise, albeit not the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls VI. Instead, Bethesda has released a spin-off mobile game titled The Elder Scrolls: Castles. While fans may have hoped for the arrival of the long-awaited sixth installment, they can find solace in this Tamriel-set spiritual sequel to Fallout Shelter.
The core gameplay of The Elder Scrolls: Castles revolves around simulating a property kingdom within the vast realms of Tamriel. Players are tasked with expanding, decorating, and ultimately ruling over their medieval masonry domain. The underground Vaults from Fallout Shelter have been replaced with majestic castles, offering a visually captivating experience. However, it is worth noting that the current art direction in the game is more reminiscent of My Time At Portia than the iconic Skyrim universe.
While The Elder Scrolls: Castles shifts the emphasis from being a hero to a manager, it still provides players with exciting quests and challenges. Dragons and other mythical creatures make appearances, adding an additional layer of adventure to the gameplay. Players can hire and train warriors who possess unique Elder Scrolls abilities such as Whirlwind. Overarching goals include appointing an heir, managing the kingdom’s food supply, and safeguarding oneself against potential assassinations by disgruntled peasants.
Currently, The Elder Scrolls: Castles is available as an early access game for Android users, unfortunately limited to the United States. However, history tells us that this mobile game will eventually make its way to PC. As we have seen with previous Bethesda releases, there is likely to be a period of exclusivity in the mobile gaming market. Fans of The Elder Scrolls series can look forward to its eventual release on PC, providing an opportunity for a wider audience to immerse themselves in the world of Tamriel.
Despite the launch of The Elder Scrolls: Castles, fans continue to eagerly await the arrival of The Elder Scrolls VI. However, the wait may be longer than anticipated. Microsoft’s legal battle with the FTC over the Activision buyout revealed that the highly desired RPG is at least five years away from release. Xbox’s Phil Spencer himself stated that the game is so far in the future that it is difficult to predict the platforms it will be available on. This has given rise to much lamenting from the loyal fanbase, as they yearn to venture into the lands of the highly anticipated sixth installment.
The Elder Scrolls: Castles offers a fresh take on the beloved franchise, providing an opportunity for players to immerse themselves in building and managing their own Tamriel kingdom. While the art direction may not fully capture the essence of Skyrim, the game still holds promise with its quests and challenges. As we await the release of The Elder Scrolls VI, fans can satiate their appetite for adventure in the world of Tamriel with The Elder Scrolls: Castles.
