Meta Platforms Maintains Privacy Boundaries in Training its AI Assistant

Clegg cited LinkedIn, a professional networking platform, as an example of a website that Meta deliberately decided not to use due to privacy concerns. By taking these measures, Meta aimed to strike a balance between enhancing its AI capabilities and safeguarding user privacy.

One of the challenges faced by AI companies like Meta is the reproduction of copyrighted materials through their AI systems. Clegg acknowledged the potential for litigation regarding the usage of creative content covered under existing fair use doctrine. Although Meta believes that their usage falls within the bounds of fair use, Clegg noted that it would likely be resolved through legal proceedings. The company plans to navigate this issue carefully to avoid any infringement claims related to copyrighted imagery.

Despite the concerns surrounding data privacy and copyright, Meta AI introduces new and powerful features. The Meta AI virtual assistant is equipped with a custom model based on the Llama 2 large language model, released for public commercial use in July. In addition, Meta developed a new model called Emu, which generates images based on text prompts. This innovative product offers a range of functionalities, including text generation, audio capability, and image synthesis.

To ensure that Meta AI has access to real-time information, Meta Platforms partnered with Microsoft’s Bing search engine. This partnership enables Meta AI to gather up-to-date data, providing users with reliable and relevant information. By leveraging the resources of Microsoft’s search engine, Meta AI can enhance its performance and offer users a more comprehensive experience.

Meta Platforms aims to continuously improve its Meta AI virtual assistant through user interactions.
