Meta Exposes Deceptive AI-Generated Content Used on Facebook and Instagram Platforms

In a recent quarterly security report, Meta revealed that they had uncovered “likely AI-generated” content being used deceptively on their Facebook and Instagram platforms. The content included comments that praised Israel’s handling of the war in Gaza. What made this discovery even more alarming was the fact that these comments were found below posts from well-known global news organizations and US lawmakers.

The social media company disclosed that the accounts responsible for the deceptive content posed as Jewish students, African Americans, and other concerned citizens. Their primary target audiences were located in the United States and Canada. Meta linked this deceptive campaign to a political marketing firm called STOIC, based in Tel Aviv. However, STOIC has yet to respond to the allegations made against them.

This report by Meta marks the first time they have encountered the use of text-based generative AI technology, which emerged towards the end of 2022. Previously, Meta had encountered basic profile photos generated by artificial intelligence in influence operations dating back to 2019. Researchers have expressed concerns about generative AI’s potential to produce human-like text, imagery, and audio, which could significantly enhance disinformation campaigns and influence elections.

During a press call, Meta’s security executives explained that they were able to detect and remove the Israeli campaign early on. They also mentioned that the novel AI technologies used did not hinder their ability to disrupt influence networks. While the campaign utilized generative AI tooling to create content quickly and at a high volume, Meta stated that it did not impact their detection capabilities.

Apart from the STOIC network, Meta also shut down an Iran-based network focused on the Israel-Hamas conflict. However, there was no indication of generative AI being used in that particular campaign. The report outlined a total of six covert influence operations that Meta managed to disrupt in the first quarter, underscoring the ongoing challenges posed by such deceptive practices.

Meta and other tech giants continue to grapple with the potential misuse of new AI technologies, particularly in the context of elections. Despite companies like OpenAI and Microsoft having policies against generating photos with voting-related disinformation, researchers have uncovered instances where these image generators have been used for such nefarious purposes. The emphasis on digital labeling systems to identify AI-generated content at the time of creation has been met with skepticism by researchers, especially in relation to text-based content.

As Meta prepares for the upcoming elections in the European Union in early June and in the United States in November, the pressure to strengthen their defenses against deceptive AI-generated content and influence operations will only intensify. The evolving landscape of technology and its potential for misuse underscore the critical importance of proactive measures and vigilant monitoring to safeguard the integrity of digital platforms.
