Is TikTok Launching a New Photo App Called TikTok Notes?

Speculations are high that TikTok is gearing up to introduce its new dedicated photo app, which has been under development for quite some time. Recent information suggests that the app may have a new official name and will be called “TikTok Notes.”

According to a recent post by @cmcalgary, TikTok users are starting to receive notifications about their still image uploads being visible on “TikTok Notes” soon. The pop-up message states, “TikTok Notes, a new app for photo posts, is coming soon. Your existing and future public TikTok photo posts will be shown on TikTok Notes.” This move indicates that TikTok is venturing into the realm of still images, trying to replicate what Instagram initially offered.

It is not the first time that TikTok has dabbled in the idea of a photo app. References to “TikTok Photos” were discovered in the app’s backend code early last month. However, it seems that the app has now transitioned to the official name “TikTok Notes.” This renaming could potentially be a dig at Instagram, which has its own “Notes” feature for sharing updates with selected friends.

The introduction of a still image app by TikTok aligns with the trends in the Chinese market, where Xiaohongshu, a local Instagram-like platform, has achieved significant success, especially after integrating eCommerce features. Leveraging its existing content, TikTok is exploring the possibility of capturing a similar market segment.

Despite TikTok’s efforts to diversify its offerings, the question remains whether users will embrace yet another still image app. Transitioning from short-form videos to a new platform poses challenges, especially considering the competitive landscape dominated by established players like Instagram. However, faced with the looming threat of a potential ban, TikTok appears to be exploring various avenues to sustain its growth.

As the parent company of TikTok, ByteDance has ventured into different segments, such as launching an eCommerce platform called Lemon8 in Western regions and a music app under TikTok Music. The introduction of a separate image app reflects ByteDance’s experimental approach to diversifying its offerings and exploring new opportunities.

TikTok’s potential launch of a new photo app called TikTok Notes signifies its attempt to expand beyond short-form video content. While the success of this endeavor remains uncertain, TikTok’s willingness to experiment and adapt to market trends showcases its resilience in the face of evolving challenges. As the platform continues to evolve, users can expect more innovative features and experiences from TikTok in the future.
